Fish rolls in Travemünde

Maritime delicacies with herring, salmon or fish cakes

On the coast, they have long since become a cult – crispy fresh rolls, exquisitely filled with eel, mackerel, herring, salmon, shrimps, fish cake or Bismarck herring.

Fresh fish rolls with a tasty filling are in season all year round in the far north and they are an essential part of your break by the sea. Whether to go, in a small fish stall right in Travemünde’s fishermen's harbour or in a fish restaurant – this typically northern snack is a real treat.

That is the classic among all fish rolls

The best-known version of the fish roll is the herring roll. Further typical ingredients are onion rings, gherkins and a lettuce leaf and if it’s fried fish, tartar sauce goes well with it. Hmm, delicious!

What is the Mikey fish burger?

To celebrate World Fish Roll Day, Travemünde’s fish sommelier Mike Wöbke is revealing his recipe for his tasty Mikey fish burger for you to copy when you need to prepare fast food at home. Bon appetit!

Ingredients:
Fish fingers, burger buns, mayonnaise, gherkin relish or burger gherkins, tomatoes, lettuce leaves, cheese and one fresh onion.

Cook the fish fingers in the oven (less fat), toast the sliced burger buns briefly or brown them in a pan with no fat. Just before the fish fingers are ready, cover them with cheese (to make sure it melts a little). Now spread the buns with mayonnaise, lay the lettuce leaves on top and add the relish or gherkin and tomato slices (tomato can also be seasoned with salt and pepper). Lay the fish fingers topped with cheese (2-3 depending on the size of the buns) on top, add some fresh onion and close the roll, done! It’s also a good idea to fix them on 1 or 2 toothpicks.

Enjoy preparing it!
