Beaches in Travemünde

Beach life the way it‘s meant to be

Explore the sunny side of the resort – barefoot and with your beach towel under your arm! In Travemünde, you will find fine sandy beaches, some highly fashionable, on the broad beach promenade, and others tranquil, hidden behind softly undulating dunes. Resort life is never more beautiful than with your feet in the sand and the sun on your head. Find your favourite spot by the sea! For your perfect beach holiday in Travemünde.

If you want to have the beach to yourself, plan your visit for the early morning hours or the blue hour in the evening.

Kurstrand (spa beach) – Travemünde’s top address

Travemünde’s Kurstrand is right beside the wide Strandpromenade (beach promenade) and forms the centrepiece of the resort. Where the Trave enters the Baltic Sea and the Nordermole jetty with its green-and-white beacon juts out into the sea, Kurstrand extends as far as the eye can see. And every year, a little fine sand is added: washed down from the steep coast of Brodten which borders the Kurstrand to the north. As wide as a football pitch at its widest point, there is enough room here for all those who like to lie in the sun, build sandcastles or engage in sporting activities. Start with a little yoga on the beach at sunrise, exhaust yourself playing beach volleyball, risk a leap into the refreshing waves and feel the salt water drying on your skin when sunbathing!

Incidentally

In 2013, Travemünde’s beaches were awarded the red banner for their safety by the International Life Saving Federation of Europe (ILSE).

Priwall – natural bathing beach on the peninsula

This peninsula right in the Trave estuary will enchant you with its pristine nature and original character. The diversity of the landscape is revealed in its full majesty on Priwall. The southern area bordering Pötenitzer Wiek is a wonderful nature conservation area while in the north of Priwall, you will find a typically north German coastal landscape consisting of dunes and beach. On the wide natural beach with its gentle dunes and adjoining woodland, you will find peace and solitude, far away from the madding crowds of the lively resort. Here the beach slopes gently down to the shallow water – ideal for a relaxing swim and popular with families with small children.

A boat ride, that’s fun

You can easily cross over to Priwall from Travemünde’s mainland by taking the ferry. You can either take the passenger ferry on foot or take your car on the car ferry.

Incidentally

You can also hire a beach chair on the natural beach on Priwall.

Dog beaches in Travemünde

You can experience a wonderful holiday by the sea together with your four-legged friend on the dog beaches in Travemünde. Enjoy the wind and the waves together, long walks on the beach and a sea full of adventures.

Two dog beaches in Travemünde
In Travemünde, the two dog beaches invite owners and their dogs to swim, dig and play together during the bathing season from 15 May–14 September. Right after the northern Kurstrand beach on the steep coast of Brodten (Söhrmanndamm area, first 100 m after the former Mövenstein swimming pool), the dog beach invites guests to take a relaxed stroll and frolic over the extensive Strandpromenade. A bathing platform for dogs here ensures that dogs can enjoy their swim as the platform takes them safely over the boulders piled up to act as a breakwater. And on Priwall at the Südermole jetty (first 100 m from the landing stage for the passenger ferry), dogs are also welcome on the beach.

Remember: As for the other beaches, a beach usage fee is charged per person on the dog beach on Priwall during the season.
The beach at Brodtener Ufer, on the other hand, is generally free of charge.

Time for your footprints in the sand!

Nudist beaches in Travemünde - topless and bottomless.

More than just “being naked”! Naturism enjoys a long tradition, developing around 1900 as a “life reform” after the prudery of the Biedermeier era. Naturism as a way of breaking free of industrial, urban life – back to nature and carefree enjoyment.

The two nudist beach areas in Travemünde also offer natural, textile-free bathing. Here you can be at one with yourself and leave the stresses of everyday life far behind. Because Travemünde has many facets. Here, historical seaside resort tradition meets relaxed, north German lifestyle. You can enjoy your holiday very fashionably on the Kurstrand beach in your beach chair or you can take things easy and get your seamless, all-over tan on the two official nudist beaches.

You can drop everything on the steep coast of Brodten in the section after the Yacht Club and on Priwall on the eastern natural beach. There are small dunes in Priwall which people like to use as a place to lie down.

Did you know: Germany’s first official nudist beach opened in 1920 on the island of Sylt.
